A large historic home on Soundview Avenue next to Bet Am Shalom is for sale. The house, named Soundview Manor, was originally owned by Patriarch Robert B. Dula, former President of Lorillard Tobacco Company and Vice-President of American Tobacco Company. He became one of White Plains' largest landowners in 1914, when he purchased 81 acres located at Sound View Avenue, Ridgeway Road, and Miles Avenue. He, thereafter, had it subdivided and commissioned leading architect of his day, Chester A. Patterson of Tarrytown, to design and build the mansion as a wedding gift for his son Robert L. Dula and young bride, Elsie Hinman, in 1920. The Soundview Avenue street name was due to the view from the Penthouse when the house was new and the trees were young. On a clear day you could see the sailboats going by on Long Island Sound.
The Dulas were a noted North Carolina family: one of them, Tom Dula, is immortalized in the Appalachian ballad 'Tom Dooley'.
This house, now run as a bed and breakfast, sits on four and a half acres of property. There are nine bedrooms and eight and a half baths and the house is 6,250 square feet. Hilary and Chelsea Clinton are among the famous guests who have stayed here. It is listed on the National and NYS Registers of Historic Places and a member of the
National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Lately I have been wondering who was going to buy all the Scarsdale mega-mansions on the market. With many struggling to meet their monthly mortgage and tax payments on “modest” homes, are there still people out there with the means to purchase multi-million homes and pay annual real estate taxes in the six figures?
