snow1-21In our neck of the dale it looks like we got about seven inches of light powder from the winter storm that hit the East Coast on January 21. The snow began at 9:30 am Tuesday morning and tapered off sometime during the night bringing a blanket of white as well as frigid temperatures and gusty winds.

This morning Scarsdale is digging out with the thermometer measuring just two degrees. Brrrrr. Schools will be on a two-hour delay and students who are eligible for district transportation will be picked up two hours later than their usual time.

According to Benny Salanitro, Scarsdale Superintendent of Public Works, "Crews have plowed and salted all roads in the Village. Commuter sidewalks and those adjacent to school buildings have been plowed as well. Due to the cold weather, which makes de-icers less effective, many roads are slippery and may have some snow pack. Residents are advised to use caution and allow for extra time in their travels today." Scarsdale Village Hall is open.

The Community Budget forum scheduled for Wednesday will be held next Wednesday, January 29 at 10am at the Girl Scout House on Wayside Lane.

Send your snow photos to [email protected] and we will post them today.

volunteerHigh school can be a scary, intimidating time for students, especially those unfamiliar with the culture and language of their peers. The Intro2America Program addresses the special challenges facing newly arrived immigrant high school students, with little or no English language skills, to the Yonkers Public Schools.

JCY-Westchester Community Partners is pleased to announce a multi-year implementation and expansion of their early intervention, comprehensive immigrant program called Intro2America.

This program will be a continuation of our partnership with New York Life, and will build on the success of the first year at Yonkers High School "ESL Center". They will continue to strengthen the ESL Center at Yonkers High and expand the program to Lincoln High School as well. In 2014 they plan to extend the hours to create after school programs as well.

They need volunteers who speak the students' language to assist students in the ESL Center. As a volunteer you will:

  • Act as a tutor to help students with class work and homework assignments.
  • Help them with pronunciation and translation.
  • Interpret cultural differences and nuanced language which is difficult for new English speakers to understand.
  • Serve as a mentor by creating a trusting relationship with the student and help establish an enriched environment for learning and academic assistance.

insidealbanyFor the third consecutive year, the LWVS will select two high school students to send to the annual Students Inside Albany conference, to be held May 18-21. All Sophomore, Junior and Senior students who attend Scarsdale High School or who reside in the school district are eligible to apply.

Joan Frankle and Janet Korins, as part of the League's youth outreach program, are spearheading the effort. The cost of the conference, including hotel and meals, will be co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of New York State Education Foundation, Inc. and our Scarsdale League.

Applications can found by visiting the Scarsdale LWV's website (LWVS.org) and are due by February 7, 2014.

Students Inside Albany is an intensive four-day conference designed to immerse students in the process by which public policy is proposed, revised and enacted in New York State and to educate them as to how they can influence and affect this process. Last year's Scarsdale students were unanimous in their enthusiasm about the program, which allowed them to interact with students from all over the state, learn about their state government and meet state legislators. For more information about the conference, go to the League of Women Voters of New York State website at http://www.lwvny.org/ and go to Youth Programs tab.
Please contact Joan Frankle (914 713 1250 or [email protected]) or Janet Korins (914 725 0859 or [email protected]) for more information or if you know someone who would like to apply for this opportunity.

Tree2Santa had no luck with the weather for his trip to Scarsdale Village on Friday December 6 for the downtown tree lighting sponsored by the Scarsdale Chamber of Commerce. A cold rain soaked parents, children and local officials – but made the free s'mores, black and white cookies and hot chocolate supplied by Lange's taste that much better. Christmas carolers from Hoff-Barthelson Music School were on hand to entertain the crowd as they awaited Santa. Plus Scarsdale Mayor Bob Steves, newly elected County Legislator Ben Boykin, Lewis Arlt and Caroline Stevens of the Chamber were on hand to greet Santa who was conveyed to the scene in a fire vehicle rather than a sled. Throngs of excited kids lined up to pose for a photo with Santa, to tell him what was on their Christmas gift lists and to get a free candy cane from Imagine Candy.
