Driver Hits Traffic Cop on Popham Road and More from the Scarsdale Police

trafficopDriver hits policeman: A Stonehouse Road man, driving a 2011 Infiniti at 6:30 pm on June 14, struck an officer who was directing traffic. The driver was travelling south on Depot Place and attempted to make a left onto Popham Road when he ran into the policeman who was directing traffic in the middle of the intersection of Depot Place and Popham Road. The driver said that he did not see the officer, who he hit with his left mirror.

Homeless man overstays his welcome: At 9 am on June 14 police received a report about a man pushing a large shopping cart along Mamaroneck Road. The man looked to be homeless. The man introduced himself to police as James Williams and said he was interested in purchasing a home and had the real estate listing in his hand. However, police asked to see his documents and when he was unable to produce them he was asked to leave the property. At 5:30 pm on June 15 Williams was again sighted pushing his shopping cart down the middle of Garden Road. Police asked him to move to the sidewalk. Later that night he was found sitting on a park bench next to the tennis courts at the Scarsdale Middle School. Police told him he had to leave school property. At 6:45 am on Sunday Williams and his shopping cart were found in the retention basin at George Field Park. Police told him that he was not permitted to sleep or stay there and he agreed to move on yet again. However apparently he did not go far because at 9 am he was still at George Field Park, this time shirtless and bathing in the water. Police asked him why he had not left and he said he was about to work out and jog down Post Road. Police tried to give Williams info about a homeless shelter which he declined. He gathered up his things and left the area. An hour later police received another call about Williams. He had moved to the Greenacres School and was sitting on the grass near the basketball court. He again volunteered to leave the area.

Homeless couple: The pastor from Hitchcock Church called police at 10:30 Sunday morning when a homeless couple was soliciting for money in front of the church. Police told them that they could not solicit without a permit and they agreed to speak to the Pastor after services.

Arrests:

Nixon E. Barrios-Maldonado of Kent, Washington was stopped by police on Weaver Street at 8:45 am on June 14 when the scanner showed that the vehicle had a suspended registration for non-payment of insurance. The license plates were removed from the red Ford van and the driver was issued a summons for driving with a suspended registration.

On June 15, Trisha Jennings of Randallstown Maryland was also stopped by police at the intersection of Dobbs Terrace and Fenimore Road when the scanner revealed a suspended registration. Further investigation showed that the car was uninsured and Jennings license had been suspended on three different dates. The plates were removed from her car and it was towed to her home in Mamaroneck. Jennings was charged with unlicensed driving, driving with a suspended registration and driving without insurance. Se was searched and released on $100 bail and released to her friend.

Maribel Calderon, age 35 of White Plains surrendered herself to police on June 14 in response to a warrant dated May 3, 2013. She was given a court appearance date of 6/19 and advised to make that date.

Broken Windows:

The rear driver's side window of a 2003 Ford Taurus was shattered when it was parked on Fairview Road on the afternoon of June 14. The car was locked at the time and nothing was missing. Police were not sure how the damage occurred.

A second floor window of a Nelson Road home was broken by a golf ball on the afternoon of June 14. The homeowner found the golf ball inside the window frame but was unsure how it had come to break the window.

Lost and Found:

Missing Rolex: A gold and stainless steel Rolex watch valued at $5,300 was taken from a Springdale Road home sometime between May 15 and June 9. The owner suspected that a construction worker had stolen the watch.

Missing Earring: A Stonewall Lane woman told police that she had misplaced a silver earring with white enamel inserts valued at $650 while attending a funeral service on Richbell Road on the afternoon of June 15. The 84 year-old woman said she had removed the earring in the bathroom of the Richbell Road home because it was uncomfortable and left it on the sink or countertop. Later that day she realized the earring was missing and returned to the house to look for it. However she was unable to find it and no one at the house had seen it.

Missing Car: A Hartsdale man called police at 10:30 am to say this his Nissan Versa had been stolen when it was parked in front of the Scarsdale Post Office. Police instructed the man to press the remote on his key chain. An audible signal was heard further up Chase Road and the man found his car parked there.

Lost on the Parkway: A Smithtown woman called police at 3:30 on Sunday when she and her husband lost their stepson while biking on the Bronx River Parkway. The three had driven from Smithtown to Bronxville to ride on the parkway on Sunday. However, while they were riding they got separated and then the parkway reopened. They had originally planned to meet at the Scarsdale train station and ride the train back to their car in Bronxville. However, she found her husband then spotted her stepson's bike at the station. But she could not find him. At 5 pm while the police were interviewing the couple, they got a call from their stepson who had taken the train back to Manhattan and was at his mother's house.

Found Pot: A Dolma Road woman found a small plastic bag containing marijuana and a white metal ring with "unknown" stones on the street when she was walking her dog on the morning of June 16. She turned the items over to police.

Dead on Arrival:

Constance Weiss age 82 of Paddington Road passed away at home on the morning of June 16. Her daughter called police and reported that her mother had passed away at 8 am. She suffered from an infection, dementia and congestive heart failure. A local doctor signed the death certificate and her body was removed to a funeral home.

Scammers:

Scary Voicemail: A Crossway dad came to police headquarters on the morning of June 16 to report that his 12 year-old daughter had received a disturbing voicemail on her cell phone the prior evening. The callers claimed to be cousin from India and threatened that if she travelled to Europe they would kill her. The also said if she told anyone about the voicemail they would kill her. Here parents did not recognize the names of the callers and said they had no cousins with those names. Police attempted to return the phone calls but no one picked up.

Phishing: A Sage Terrace woman reported that she has been receiving calls from a collection agent who claims to work for Wells Fargo Bank. She also received a fraudulent statement in the mail with the phone number for the collection agent. Police advised her that this looked like a phishing scam and told her not to respond.

Disputes:

A 60 year-old woman who lives with her mother on Coralyn Road called police on the afternoon of June 12 to say that she could not live there with her mother and her mother's home assistant. She said she gets into verbal altercations with her mother and the assistants regularly. A representative from Westchester County Adult Protective Services came to the house as well as a crisis intervention association.

A Lockwood Road man called police at 9:30 pm on June 11 to complain that his neighbor's porch light was shining in his window and preventing him from sleeping. Police went by and told the man that his neighbor's porch light was not directed at his house. They recommended that he wear a sleep mask.

A Bell Road woman called police at 11:40 pm on June 12 when her ex-husband was banking on the front door of the house trying to get in. Though she formerly had an order of protection against him it was no longer in force. Police agreed to do extra ride-bys of the house.

A Fox Meadow Road woman who suffers from dementia called police on the afternoon of June 10 to say that she no longer wanted her caregiver in the house. Police called the woman's daughter who calmed down her mother and said that her mother would forget about the incident shortly.

A Shaw Road man called police on June 16 to report a disagreement with an appliance repairman. He said that the repairman did not complete the work and the two had a disagreement about payment. The repairman called and said, "I will break into your house, break your fridge and take the parts back" accompanied by profanities.

A Yonkers' man called police on the evening of June 10 after another driver cut him off and then threw change at his car. Police were able to contact the mother of the other driver who thanked police for making her aware of what her son had done and said she would speak to him.

Animals:

Injured Rabbit: Police got a call about an injured animal on the lawn of a Stratton Road home at 9 am on June 10. They found a rabbit with two broken legs that was unable to move. Using his pistol, the officer "dispatched" the injured bunny and removed it.

Lost Dog: A golden retriever with no tags was found by a Cohawney Road woman on the evening of June 11. Police picked up the dog and brought it headquarters. Shortly afterwards the dog's owner arrived to pick up the dog.

Turtle: A Murray Hill Road man called about a large turtle in the road on the afternoon of June 15. By the time police arrived, the turtle had moved to the side of the road and was out of danger.

Other:

Rocks in the road: Police were alerted that 2 large rocks on Saxon Wood Road were causing a hazard at 9 pm on June 12. The caller told police that the rocks punctured her tire. Police moved the rocks to the side of the road.

Locked in: A five year-old girl got locked into the bathroom of a home on Webster road at 6:30 pm on June 13. The fire department went to the house and got her out.

On the morning of June 14 a Farragut Road woman called police after a large truck passed her as she was driving on Saxon Woods Road. The truck hit a tree branch that broke and hit her car. Her car was damaged and police dragged the brand from the road.

A young child was riding a gas-powered mini-bike at the Edgewood School at 6 pm on June 14. Someone called the police who informed the mother that gas powered bikes could not be ridden on the school grounds. The mom immediately put the bike away and said she was unaware of the rule.

Pranks:

Spier Road residents called police at 7 am on June 15 when they awoke to find grass clippings piled on top of their cars. The cars were not damaged.

Lockwood Road residents called police on the morning of June 15 when a tree on their property was uprooted and thrown on the front lawn. The village-owned tree had recently been planted. The resident was able to replant the tree.
